What the numbers mean

From offer letter to take-home

  1. Basic salary
  2. + Allowances
  3. − Deductions
  4. = Net salary
Basic salary
The core monthly figure. Bonuses and some exemptions are often tied to basic, not to gross.
Allowances
House rent, medical, conveyance and other named parts of the package. Some of these may be partly exempt; the rule is not the same every year.
Gross salary
Basic plus allowances (and any other taxable cash) before tax and other deductions.
Deductions
Tax withheld, provident fund, loan EMI and similar. This tool estimates tax; it does not know your PF or loan.
Taxable income
Annual income after the exemptions the model applies. NBR may apply different exemptions in the current year.
Net salary
What is left after the deductions you include. A payslip can still differ because of festival bonus timing or arrears.

How this estimate is built

Monthly picture

Net ≈ gross − monthly tax estimate − other deductions you apply yourself

  • If you only enter gross, the tool splits a typical 50/30/10/10 basic–rent–medical–conveyance pattern so you can see a structure. Replace those parts with your offer letter when you can.
  • Annual taxable income is estimated, then divided across 12 months. Real TDS can be different.
  1. Enter monthly gross or basic — Use the figure on the appointment letter or last payslip.
  2. Adjust allowances if you know them — Do not leave defaults if your house rent is written as a fixed taka amount.
  3. Note the model tax — Read the slab table as an illustration of progressive tax, not as this year’s gazette.
  4. Compare with payroll — If the company TDS differs, the company is following its own NBR interpretation or software.

Worked salary example

Reading a ৳60,000 package

Monthly gross ৳60,000. For illustration only, split as basic ৳30,000, house rent ৳18,000, medical ৳6,000, conveyance ৳6,000.

  1. Gross = 30,000 + 18,000 + 6,000 + 6,000 = ৳60,000
  2. Annual cash is at least 60,000 × 12, plus any festival basic you add
  3. Exemptions (if any) reduce taxable income; remaining income is run through progressive slabs in the model
  4. Monthly net ≈ 60,000 − (annual model tax ÷ 12)

Use the on-page result for the current model. Recalculate when NBR publishes a new slab table.

  • Festival bonuses are often paid as extra months of basic. They can change annual tax even if monthly gross looks unchanged.
  • A loan EMI comes out of net pay; it is not an NBR slab.
  • Keep payslips if you later need NID or visa income proof.

FAQ

Is this the official NBR tax for the current year?

No. It is an estimate from a built-in model. Download the current NBR guide before filing.

What is the difference between gross and net?

Gross is the package before tax and other deductions. Net is what is left after those deductions.
