Inheritance (faraid) estimate

A Hanafi sketch for spouse, children and parents. Not a court order, not a succession certificate, and not legal advice. Labelled as an estimate so it cannot be waved as a decree.

What this will not do

  • Grandparents, siblings, wasiyyah (will) of one-third, or debts of the estate are not fully modelled.
  • Hindu, Christian or customary succession is a different statute — do not use this tool for those estates.
  • Land mutation still needs a death certificate and the land portals.

How to read the shares

Enter who survived: husband or wife, number of sons and daughters, whether father and mother are alive. The engine applies a simplified Hanafi map (fixed shares then residue). Sons taking twice daughters in the residue is the classical rule this sketch follows.

  • Pay funeral costs and proven debts of the deceased before dividing the residue — this calculator starts after that mental step.
  • Convert land area separately on the land calculator; shares here are fractions of the estate, not square feet.

A worked example

Wife, two sons and one daughter, ৳12,00,000 estate

Husband has passed away. Survivors: wife, 2 sons, 1 daughter. Parents are not living.

  1. Wife’s share (with children present) = 1/8 of 12,00,000 = ৳1,50,000
  2. Remaining for children = 12,00,000 − 1,50,000 = ৳10,50,000
  3. Units: (2 sons × 2 shares) + (1 daughter × 1 share) = 5 units, so 1 unit = 10,50,000 ÷ 5 = ৳2,10,000
  4. Each son gets 2 units = ৳4,20,000; the daughter gets 1 unit = ৳2,10,000

Wife ৳1,50,000, two sons ৳4,20,000 each (৳8,40,000 total), daughter ৳2,10,000 — adds back to the full ৳12,00,000 estate.

FAQ

Why do sons get twice daughters?

That 2:1 residue split is the classical Hanafi rule among children. This calculator follows it and labels the result as an estimate.

Can I take this to the AC (land) office?

No. Mutation wants a death certificate, khatian identifiers and whatever succession paper that desk asks — not a website sketch.

What if there are no children?

Parents and spouse shares change. The form still needs you to tick who is alive; unusual trees (only siblings) are out of scope.

Is this Hanafi only?

Yes, a simplified Hanafi sketch. Other schools and Bangladesh statutes for non-Muslim estates are not implemented.

What exact share does a wife get?

1/8 of the estate if the husband left surviving children, or 1/4 if there are none. A husband’s share as a surviving spouse is 1/4 with children, or 1/2 without.
