Zakat on gold jewellery: weight, nisab and 2.5%
Not the memo total — grams × today’s metal rate. If you meet nisab, pay 2.5%. Fitra is a different payment.
1. Weigh
Use the shop’s digital scale in grams. Metal only — not stones or making charge. If the memo is in bhori, 1 bhori = 11.664 g on the gold page.
22K and 21K have different gram rates. Mixed jewellery should be weighed by karat, not averaged into one “sort of 22K”.
2. Nisab
Gold nisab is about 87.48 g; silver about 612.36 g. Gold nisab is higher, so fewer people qualify; many scholars prefer silver nisab as more inclusive. Do not average them.
Whether everyday jewellery is exempt is disputed. The cautious view counts all gold. This article does not decide; ask the scholar you follow.
| Metal | About (grams) |
|---|---|
| Gold | 87.48 |
| Silver | 612.36 |
3. Do not use the memo total
A purchase memo splits metal, making charge and VAT. Zakat usually follows metal. A “zero making charge” offer may bury extra metal price — see how to read a gold memo.
Fitra is a per-person Ramadan staple amount announced locally. It is not this 2.5% wealth zakat.
4. Calculator
Enter grams, cash and due debts in the zakat calculator. Live gold and silver gram rates fill the nisab line.
Mixed businesses, shares or livestock are out of scope. getBangla is not a darul ifta.
