What it is and who needs it
An e-passport is a biometric passport with an electronic chip that stores the holder’s identity and the required biometric data. It is used for international travel and identity checks. In Bangladesh, the Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP) runs the e-passport service.
getBangla is an independent information site. It is not a government office. Use only the official portal to apply and pay.

Page count and validity options
Options that may appear on the form
| Choice | Common options | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Page count | 48 pages or 64 pages | The practical difference is the number of visa and stamp pages. Not every applicant sees every option. |
| Validity | 5 years, or 10 years for applicable adult applicants | Availability depends on the applicant category and the current rules. A longer validity is not open to everyone. |
| Delivery | Regular, and faster service where it is offered | Urgent or fast delivery should not be assumed at every centre or at all times. |
| Applicant category | Adult, minor, renewal or reissue | Which combinations open depends on the current government rules and the type of application. |
Fees can change with page count, validity and the type of delivery or service. Check the current fees and available options on the official portal before you apply.
What to prepare
The identity document that applies depends on the applicant’s age and circumstances. The table below is general guidance. If the official instruction for a case is different, follow what the government portal asks for at the time of application.
Identity document by situation
| Applicant | Document that may apply |
|---|---|
| 20 years or older | National identity card (NID), where it applies |
| Under 18 | Birth registration certificate (BRC) |
| 18–20 years | NID or BRC, according to the applicable government instruction |
| A minor who has no NID | A parent’s NID details, where that applies |
This is not an absolute rule for every exception. Use the document the official portal requests for that application.
- Keep the smart NID ready where it applies, and enter the details as they appear on that card.
- Where a birth record applies, keep the online birth registration certificate (BRC) ready and use it according to the information the portal asks for.
- For a reissue or renewal, keep the old passport until the new one has been collected.
- An e-passport application usually does not require attaching or attesting a photograph on the form. An extra photo may be needed for a specific age or a special case. Follow the government portal’s instruction when you apply.
- If the portal asks for a paper related to profession, provide what that instruction names. Do not add documents from memory.
How to apply
- Start on the official e-passport portal — Begin the application on the official e-passport portal. Confirm the address from DIP’s own site or a government notice, not from a search advertisement or a third-party page.
- Enter personal details — Fill in the name, date of birth and other personal details exactly as they appear on the NID or the applicable birth registration. A mismatch can add extra complication when the application is checked. Use a mobile number you can answer.
- Choose the application and service options — Select the page count, validity and delivery type from the options the portal opens for that application. Not every combination is available to every applicant.
- Pay the fee — Pay the current fee shown on the portal, through the official channel it lists. Keep the payment receipt and the application number.
- Attend the office for enrolment — Go to the regional passport office, or the Bangladesh mission abroad where that applies, on the appointed day. Fingerprints, a photograph and a signature are usually taken there as biometric data. Follow the enrolment instruction you receive.
- Check the application status — Use the same official portal, or the status facility published there, to see how the application is moving. Do not ignore an SMS or a notice on the portal.
- Collect the passport when it is ready — When collecting the passport, take the delivery slip and the identity document or papers the authority has asked for. Where to collect it is stated in the instruction given with the application.
Mistakes to avoid
- Applying through a third-party Facebook page or an unofficial agent.
- Entering details that do not match the NID or birth registration certificate (BRC).
- Giving a wrong mobile number.
- Failing to keep the application or payment receipt and other important details.
- Ignoring the appointment or enrolment instruction.
- Assuming urgent or fast delivery is available at every centre, all the time.
Government rules, fees and processing arrangements can change. The current instruction of the passport authority is final.

FAQ
Where do I check passport status?
Use the official e-passport portal or the status facility published there. Do not rely on a third-party page. Start from the e-passport portal.
What is the fee for 5 years or 10 years?
This guide does not print a fixed amount. The fee can change with page count, validity and the type of delivery. Check the current fee on the official e-passport portal before you apply.
What if the name spelling on the NID and the passport differs slightly?
Enter details consistently with the applicable identity document. If the spelling or another detail does not match, resolve it according to the passport authority’s instruction before or while you apply. Do not invent a different spelling.
Is police verification required for an e-passport?
After government changes introduced in 2025, police verification is no longer required in the same way as before for ordinary passport issuance where the applicant’s information can be checked against the relevant government records. If a particular case needs extra verification or documents, follow the passport authority’s instruction. Additional verification is not impossible in every case.
What is the difference between a 48-page and a 64-page passport?
The main practical difference is the number of pages available for visas and stamps. Which option is available, and what it costs, depends on the current official options. Not every applicant can select every page count.
Where do I apply for an e-passport?
Apply only on the official e-passport portal. Department information is also on the DIP website. Do not apply through an agent or a Facebook page.
What should I do if a passport is lost?
Follow the process the passport authority, and where it applies the police, currently require. Which papers are needed can depend on the case. Read the current instruction on the official portal or ask the passport office. This guide does not set out a detailed lost-passport procedure.
Can I apply for an e-passport online from home?
You can fill in the form and pay online. Fingerprints, photo and signature are still taken in person on the appointed day at the passport office, or at the mission abroad where that applies.
How do I check my e-passport application status?
Use only the status facility on the official e-passport portal. Keep the application number and payment receipt handy, and do not ignore an SMS or portal notice.
