e-Passport application checklist: documents, fee check and common mistakes

Fees and options change, so there is no fixed number here. Instead: the decisions to make before you apply, the papers to keep, and where to confirm the fee.

NID and papers ready for an e-passport application
Application details need to match the NID or birth registration exactly.

1. What to decide first

The form asks for page count (48 or 64), validity (5 years, or 10 where it applies) and delivery type. Frequent travellers get more use from the longer book. Not every option is open to every applicant.

The fee depends on those three choices, so settle them first and only then check the fee. Details are in the e-passport guide.

2. Papers and details

The identity document depends on age. A general checklist:

  • Smart NID for adults; birth registration for minors.
  • Name, date of birth and parents’ names exactly as they appear on the NID or birth registration.
  • A mobile number on which you can take calls and SMS.
  • The old passport if you are renewing.

3. Where to check the fee

The fee differs by page count, validity and delivery type, and the government can change it. Do not go to the bank with a number from an old chart or a Facebook post. Read the fee at the time of your application on the official e-passport portal and pay through the channel it lists.

4. After you apply

After the online form and fee, attend the office on the appointed day for fingerprints, photo and signature. Keep the application number and payment receipt. Check status only through the official portal’s facility, and do not ignore an SMS or notice.
